San Diego, California

San Diego was home to 1,386,932 people at the 2020 census, the eighth most populous city in the country, and the metro area had about 3.3 million. It sits on the Pacific coast, on the Mexican border, and its economy runs on several engines at once. Wikipedia lists military and defense, tourism, international trade, research and manufacturing as the largest sectors, with Qualcomm headquartered here and a large biotech industry. Before choosing a budget app for managing money in San Diego, ask which of those economies pays you.

Four paychecks that do not look alike

A sailor at Naval Base San Diego, a lab technician in the biotech cluster, a server at a Gaslamp restaurant and a UC San Diego staff member all live in the same city and plan their months in different ways. Military pay arrives on a schedule, with housing and allowances shaping the net. Biotech and research salaries land regularly, with bonuses and equity on separate dates. Hospitality pay depends on hours, tips and the season. University pay follows an academic calendar.

The only habit they share is the one that works: enter each deposit when it lands, enter each bill once, and look at the month as a whole. That is the difference between a plan and a guess.

Comic-Con and the hotel summer

Tourism is a major employer, and the clearest example of a one-week economic event is Comic-Con. This year’s convention ran from July 22 to 26 at the San Diego Convention Center. Organizers expected more than 135,000 attendees, and the city projected a regional impact above $160 million, with visitors spending more than $95 million at local hotels, restaurants and attractions and more than 61,000 hotel room nights booked, according to coverage by KPBS. A separate University of California San Diego model estimated about $200 million, though that was described as not yet peer reviewed. Mayor Todd Gloria announced an agreement to keep the event in San Diego through 2030.

All of that is projection, not pay, but it shows why a hotel worker, a rideshare driver or a restaurant server might have a very different July than February. The way to plan around a week like that is to wait for the deposit before treating it as spendable.

Why the weather does not remove the seasons

San Diego’s climate is mild, with an average of 201 days a year above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and about 9 to 13 inches of rain, according to Wikipedia. Winters are light and there is little heating cost. The seasons here show up in tourism, not in temperature. Spring and summer bring crowds to the Zoo, SeaWorld and the beaches, and nearby Legoland California in Carlsbad adds to it. Hours and tips follow.

For a household, the effect is that income moves with visitors while rent does not. Look at your best three months and your weakest three, and plan the fixed list against the weaker set.

Across the border

San Diego is the economic center of a binational region of about five million people with Tijuana, and the San Ysidro Port of Entry is the busiest international land crossing in the world outside Asia. For many households that means family, work or shopping on both sides. If you send money to relatives or pay for something in Mexico, enter it as a fixed expense on the day it leaves your account, in dollars, at the amount you actually paid.

Keep the exchange rate out of the plan. Use what you paid, and the plan will not be wrong.

Naval Base San Diego has been in the city since at least 1930, and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is also in the area. A service member’s pay is predictable and so are the costs that come with it: housing, a vehicle, insurance, allotments and the occasional move. A deployment changes the household’s cash flow, not its bills.

The sensible approach is to enter the pay, enter the housing cost, and look at the remainder. If a spouse works, list that income separately. When an orders change or a move is coming, enter the cost in the month it happens, so the plan carries the bill before the day it arrives.

Getting around

San Diego is a spread-out city. La Jolla, Coronado, downtown and the inland neighborhoods are separated by freeways, bridges and bays. Most households drive, which makes fuel, insurance, parking and maintenance a large fixed line. If you use the trolley or a bus pass for part of the week, compare the cost with the parking you would have paid.

July at the hotel, February at the hotel

Start with an imagined hotel employee in a busy July. Wages and tips deposited are $4,350. Rent is $1,950, groceries as a fixed $450, car payment and insurance $520, utilities $130, internet and phone $125, a credit card minimum of $110 and a $60 slice for registration and repairs. Fixed expenses total $3,345. With a $220 weekend reserve, the month leaves $4,350 minus $3,345 minus $220, or $785.

Then the same worker in a quiet February. Deposits drop to $3,050. The month leaves $3,050 minus $3,345 minus $220, or negative $515. The gap between the two months is $1,300 in income and nothing else. Setting aside $515 of July’s $785 is a decision you can make in July, with the number in front of you.

First move: enter your highest and lowest month of the last year with the same bills in each. Enter your best month and your slowest one and see how much July has to cover →

Retirement plans, savings and group rentals

University, military or employer retirement plans, a savings account and a brokerage balance go in as typed lines with the balance and the date. They are never connected and never advised on. If you front a beach-house rental or concert tickets, the amount waiting to come back sits under money owed. The features page explains each part.

Why manual entry fits a mixed economy

When one household has a base paycheck, a spouse’s hourly job and an occasional bonus, a plan that treats them all the same hides the differences. Entering each by hand keeps them separate, and the plan shows which one carries the rent.

After your next shift or payday, put in the deposit first. Log your last paycheck and rent, then see how thin a quiet month gets →

Frequently asked questions about Monthly in San Diego

Everything you need to know before you start.

I work hotel shifts around the Convention Center. What did Comic-Con mean for hours?
Organizers expected more than 135,000 attendees for the July 22 to 26, 2026 convention, and the city projected over 61,000 hotel room nights booked. Those are projections, not payroll data, but they show why July can be a high-hours month. Enter your actual deposits and compare July with a quieter month before you commit to any new expense.
San Diego seems to have mild weather. Does that make utilities a non-issue?
Less of an issue, not none. Wikipedia lists an average of 201 days a year above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and mild winters, so heating is light. Cooling during a hot spell and the base electric rate still deserve a fixed line, and you should update it after any bill that is far from the usual.
I commute from Tijuana or have family across the border. How do I handle two currencies?
Enter amounts in dollars, using the figure you actually received or paid after conversion. The San Ysidro Port of Entry is the busiest international land crossing in the world outside Asia, according to Wikipedia, so cross-border households are common. Log a transfer to family as a fixed expense on the day it leaves your account.
I am a sailor stationed at Naval Base San Diego. What should I put in first?
Put in your net pay for the month and the rent or housing cost you pay, then everything that repeats. Military pay arrives on a schedule, so the useful number is how much is left after housing, a car and any allotments. Enter a deployment or a move as a one-time cost in the month it happens.
Is a biotech job with equity easier to plan than an hourly one?
Different, not easier. Salary lands on a schedule, while stock or bonus payments land on their own dates and amounts. Leave them out until they are in your account, then decide how much goes to the fixed list and how much to savings.
