How to organize your month in Albuquerque without constantly putting out fires

A concrete guide to lowering financial anxiety and gaining clarity with your paycheck, fixed expenses, reserves and investments.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city, with 564,559 residents at the 2020 census and an estimated 556,588 in 2025. It is also a place where several kinds of paychecks sit side by side: federal lab and base jobs, university work, a growing film and television industry, and a service sector that follows the seasons. A budget app for managing money in Albuquerque has to cope with both the steady and the uneven. Monthly is a free app you fill in by hand: income, fixed expenses, a weekend reserve, and the number left over.

The federal paycheck and the film paycheck

Kirtland Air Force Base, established in 1939, is described as the largest installation in the Air Force Global Strike Command. Sandia National Laboratories, one of three laboratories of the National Nuclear Security Administration, dates to 1949. The University of New Mexico is the state’s flagship and largest university. Together they supply steady, salaried work with a predictable schedule.

Next to them is a different kind of work. Netflix Studios operates in the city’s Southeast quadrant, and Wikipedia calls Albuquerque a hub for mass media. Film and television work arrives in bursts: a production starts, crew are hired and paid, then the production wraps. A crew member can earn well in one quarter and little in the next.

The budget issue is the same for both groups but shows up at different speeds. The federal employee needs to find slow leaks. The crew member needs to see the gap before it opens.

Rent has moved faster than the paycheck

Housing is the largest line for most households, and the rest of the fixed list follows: car payments, insurance, utilities and phones. When rent moves faster than a raise, the free money figure falls even though the paycheck looks healthy, and the squeeze arrives at every income level.

Worked example: a lab technician at renewal

Hypothetical numbers. A technician takes home $4,300 a month. Rent is $1,350, car payment and insurance are $430, utilities are $210, phone is $65 and a student loan is $220, for fixed expenses of $2,275. The weekend reserve is $300.

Real free money: $4,300 minus $2,275 minus $300 equals $1,725.

A $110 rent increase takes fixed expenses to $2,385 and real free money to $1,615. Over a year, that is $1,320 a household did not plan for. The technician who updates the rent line on signing day sees the loss immediately; one who waits sees it in the bank balance in March.

Test your own number before the lease letter does. Type in your rent and car costs and see what a $110 increase takes from your month →

Worked example: a crew member between productions

Hypothetical again. A crew member takes home $5,200 in a month on a production and $900 in a gap month from smaller gigs. Fixed expenses are $2,250: rent at $1,200, car payment at $380, a self-purchased health plan at $450, phone at $60 and utilities at $160. The reserve is $250.

Work month: $5,200 minus $2,250 minus $250 equals $2,700.

Gap month: $900 minus $2,250 minus $250 equals minus $1,600.

The gap month is a negative number, and that is the information. To cover one empty month, the crew member needs to carry at least $1,600 forward out of the $2,700. A second empty month needs $3,200. Writing the figure down turns “I should save something” into a target.

Sun, altitude and monsoon season

Albuquerque sits at 5,312 feet, with a cold semi-arid climate, about 8.84 inches of rain a year and some 3,415 hours of sunshine. Most of the rain falls in the July to early September monsoon. Dry air and altitude affect more than the weather: evaporative cooling, roof upkeep, window repairs and car tires all have rhythms of their own. A small monthly repair line in the fixed list, changed after any real repair, spreads out costs that otherwise arrive as shocks.

October belongs to the balloons

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is described as the largest balloon festival in the world, and the 2026 edition, the 54th, ran October 3 to 11 at Balloon Fiesta Park. Hotels fill, traffic changes, and anyone working a food stand, a rental or a ticket booth sees a different month. For others, it is a week of parking, breakfast burritos and a few extras. Put a figure in the weekend reserve before the first Saturday and compare it with the month.

Taxes at the register

New Mexico uses a gross receipts tax rather than a conventional sales tax, and the combined Albuquerque rate has been reported at 7.625%, with food from retail grocery stores deducted. Rates change periodically and should be checked against the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. In Monthly you do not need the rate. Enter what you paid.

A catch-all line for the small shocks

A cracked windshield, a failed appliance, a monsoon-season leak: none of them is large, and together they decide whether a month closes with money left. A single catch-all line in the fixed list, perhaps $50, refilled every month and spent only on surprises, means a repair draws on a fund instead of on rent.

Getting around

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter line serves the Alvarado Transportation Center intermodal hub, and the city’s transit department runs buses. Most households still rely on cars. Fuel, parking and the occasional trip to Santa Fe belong in their own lines so you can see which one moves.

Money owed and savings

Families here often lend each other money for a car repair, a deposit or the drive to a relative’s wedding. Put those loans in the money owed list with a name, an amount and the date you expect it back, so they do not live in your head. A lab or university retirement plan, a savings account or a credit-union balance can sit in the investments list as a note with the date you checked. The app never connects to them and never says what to buy; it just keeps the figures where you can see them next to the monthly plan.

What to do this week

Frequently asked questions about Monthly in Albuquerque

Everything you need to know before you start.

I work on film productions in Albuquerque. How do I budget the gaps between jobs?
Enter each production's pay as income in the month it arrives, then run the fixed list against a month with no production income. The negative number you see is the cushion you need to carry from the work months.
Does a budget app for managing money in Albuquerque need to know about gross receipts tax?
No. Monthly uses the amounts you spend, not rates. If you track grocery or restaurant spending, enter what you actually paid at the register.
How do I plan for Balloon Fiesta week?
Treat it as one weekend reserve decision. Decide parking, food and gear before the first Saturday of October, and compare it with what the month leaves.
Can I use Monthly if I work at Sandia or Kirtland and get paid biweekly?
Yes. Enter each paycheck as it lands. For a two-income household, enter both so the fixed bills are measured against the full total.
My summer power bill barely changes but my monsoon-season repairs do. Where do those go?
Put a small monthly repair line in the fixed list, such as $40 for roof or window upkeep, and note how much is left when something breaks.
