Guides to organising your monthly budget

A monthly budget brings expected income and upcoming commitments into one plan. These starting points from the Monthly team help you review that plan without connecting a bank account.

Understand available money

A bank balance is not a budget: it may include money already committed to a future bill. Monthly calculates a budget figure from your entries, not live bank transactions. Read the budgeting and investment FAQ before interpreting the totals.

Match paydays to bill dates

Keep expected payments distinct from money already received. Our biweekly paycheck budgeting guide follows a dated example across two months and explains why a third payday is not automatically extra spending money.

Check your categories for missing costs

Use the monthly budget categories checklist to review recurring bills, irregular costs and transfers. It explains how a purchase and its payment can accidentally become two copies of the same expense.

Record expenses without a bank connection

See the manual expense tracking workflow: choose a month, enter a purchase, correct mistakes and export a copy. You maintain the records; Monthly does not automatically retrieve your bank transactions.
