Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City has a larger economy than its size suggests. It is Utah’s capital and most populous city, with about 200,000 residents inside the city limits and roughly 1.3 million in the metro area. Wikipedia describes it as the industrial banking center of the United States, and it is the hub of a tech belt that people call Silicon Slopes. A budget app for managing money in Salt Lake City has to start from a decent paycheck and a landlord who raised the rent faster than the pay.

The rent problem, with numbers

The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah tracked what happened to rents along the Wasatch Front. In Salt Lake County, asking rents rose at an annualized rate of 11.0% between 2020 and 2022, compared with 2.6% a year between 2010 and 2020. The institute also found that between 2016 and 2021 rent growth in the county more than doubled the growth in renter household income. Those figures are a few years old, and rents have moved since, but the lesson holds: a salary that felt generous in 2019 does not stretch the same way.

What that means for your monthly plan is simple. Rent is the largest fixed line, and it is the only one that can change by a few hundred dollars at renewal. Review it first. Before you sign a new lease, enter the proposed rent in Monthly and see what happens to the money left at the end of the month.

Pay that arrives in pieces

A lot of Salt Lake City jobs pay a base salary plus a bonus, an equity grant or commission. The University of Utah, the banking sector and the wider tech belt all bring in people on different pay structures. The risk is a plan built around the annual number.

Bonus checks are often withheld at a flat 22% rate for federal income tax, according to payroll guidance based on IRS Publication 15. That is a withholding rate, not the tax you will finally owe, but it shows why the deposit can be smaller than the figure in your offer. So the rule is: plan monthly on base pay, and enter the extra income on the day it lands. A bonus then becomes a decision, not a number you already spent in your head.

Utah’s flat tax and what it means for a paycheck

Utah uses a single flat rate. For 2026 it is 4.45%, down from 4.5% after Governor Spencer Cox signed S.B. 60, retroactive to January 1, 2026, according to EY. The Utah State Tax Commission published new withholding tables for payrolls starting on June 1, 2026, which means your net pay may have changed slightly. If you built your plan from an older stub, enter the latest one.

A flat rate makes this easier to plan than a graduated one, because a raise is taxed at the same state rate as the rest of your pay. You still pay federal income tax and payroll taxes, so use your actual net figure.

Getting around the valley

Salt Lake City is a driving city, but it has rail. TRAX light rail opened in 1999 and runs along Main Street through downtown, and the S Line streetcar opened in December 2013. If your job and home are near a line, a transit pass can reduce parking, fuel and wear on a car. If they are not, the commute is a car note, insurance, gas and maintenance. Put whichever one you use into the fixed list at its real monthly price.

Winter adds a second reason to be watchful. Cold air settles in the valley and can trap pollution for days, and the city has been ranked among the worst in the country for air quality in the past. People who work from home on those days see the effect on a different line: heating and electricity. Update your utility entry when the bill changes rather than relying on last spring’s number.

Weekends in the mountains

Tourism here is driven in large part by skiing and outdoor recreation. For residents, that means a short drive to the slopes and a weekend that can cost more than it appears: a lift ticket or season pass, gas, a rental, lunch on the mountain and a drink on the way back. The cost of a single outing is manageable. The cost of every weekend from December to March is another budget altogether.

Set the weekend reserve for the season you are in. In winter, include the pass or day ticket and the drive. In summer, when you hike and camp, the reserve can go down. Spending it freely inside the number you set is the point.

Rent at renewal, in dollars

Start with a renter on a steady salary (all figures invented). Take-home is $4,400 a month. Rent is $1,650, utilities $140, internet and phone $135, student loan $310, groceries as a fixed $480, subscriptions $60 and car payment and insurance $520. Fixed expenses total $3,295. With a $220 weekend reserve, the month leaves $4,400 minus $3,295 minus $220, or $885.

Next, the same renter after a $200 rent increase at renewal. Fixed expenses rise to $3,495, so the month leaves $4,400 minus $3,495 minus $220, or $685. Over a year that is $2,400 of extra rent, and it comes straight out of what was free money. If a $4,000 bonus arrives, $2,400 of it keeps the plan whole for twelve months, which is a decision you can make on purpose.

First move: enter your base pay, the current rent and the proposed new rent, and compare the two months. Add your renewal offer to the plan and see what the new rent leaves →

Roommates and the savings you already have

In a market where rents took a big jump, many renters share a place. Enter only your share as a fixed line, and anything you front for the household under money owed; the roommate bill-splitting guide walks through it. A 401(k), a savings account or an employer stock plan can be listed with a balance and the date you last looked, as a typed note that never touches those accounts.

What manual entry changes

Typing the figures takes a few seconds, and it makes you look at them. When the number you see is the one you entered, it is the number you decided on. You can also see what the app does before opening it in the feature overview.

After the next paycheck, open Monthly and put the current rent in first. Enter this month’s rent and your take-home, then see what is left before the first of the month →

Frequently asked questions about Monthly in Salt Lake City

Everything you need to know before you start.

Utah lowered its income tax rate this year. Do I need to change anything in my plan?
Only your take-home. Utah's flat individual income tax rate for 2026 is 4.45%, down from 4.5%, and the Tax Commission's new withholding tables apply to payrolls beginning June 1, 2026, according to EY tax news. Your paycheck may have crept up a little. Enter the new net amount from your next stub and leave the rest alone.
My employer pays an annual bonus in the spring. Should I count on it in the monthly plan?
Leave it out until it lands. Bonus checks are often withheld at a flat 22% rate for federal income tax, which can differ from what you eventually owe, so the deposit may be smaller than the number in your offer letter. Enter the bonus on the day it arrives, then decide how much covers the rent increase and how much goes to savings.
Rent in Salt Lake County climbed fast a few years ago. How do I know my lease renewal is a problem?
Put the new rent into your fixed list before you sign and look at the result. The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute found asking rents in Salt Lake County rose at an 11.0% annual rate between 2020 and 2022, against 2.6% a year in the prior decade. If the renewed rent drops your free money below your weekend reserve, you have your answer before the lease deadline.
I ski most weekends from December to March. How do I plan for lift tickets?
Treat the winter as its own plan. Add the season pass or the per-day ticket cost, gas for the canyon and any gear into the weekend reserve for those months, and let the reserve shrink back in summer. Skiing is a large part of how visitors spend here, so the prices are real and worth tracking.
Is it worth tracking a TRAX pass instead of a parking permit?
Enter both as fixed lines and compare the monthly totals. TRAX light rail has run along Main Street downtown since 1999, so if your job is on the line, a pass may replace a parking permit and some fuel. The comparison takes two entries and costs nothing.
